  • The AILEY Extension 405 W 55th St New York, NY 10019 (map)

Fresh off the stage from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's 2016 North American Tour, Ailey dancer Sean Carmon will teach a Contemporary Jazz workshop, open to anyone who has ever been moved by music.

For the beginner student, this class will introduce the simultaneous power and subtlety of dynamic movement; for the advanced student, it will reiterate and motivate developing artistry. Beginning with a thorough warm-up that pulls from many masters of dance—Alvin Ailey, Lester Horton, Martha Graham, Luigi and Bob Fosse—the student will be able to move at their own pace. Elements of Horton and Graham-based modern, infused with classic jazz techniques will create a moving, musical and challenging experience. Complex but attainable rhythmic patterns will be given with specific notes and references to masterworks. Simple yet detailed, cardio-focused exercises across-the-floor will help to strengthen the student's technique, while fine tuning their eye for detail. Class will end with a combination to music that will challenge the student's perception of typical jazz or contemporary dance.
